Σύλλογος Βόλου & Περιχώρων, «Αργοναύτες»
The Association of Volos “the Argonauts” is a nonprofit organization established in 1983 from the Prefecture of Magnesia with president, Mr. Petros Avarakis. Their main objective was to connect Hellenes from this region and promote the traditions and culture of the people of this vicinity. During this time the association has held many events to promote their traditions and lifestyle of the past. Their annual dinner dances were an excellent example of song and dance of the region. The association also has held many events over the years supporting the Thessalon Federation of Ontario as well as the Greek Community of Toronto. It has also supported the nonprofit organization of Petaloudes, based in the city of Volos, which supports children with special needs.
O Σύλλογος «ΟΙ ΑΡΓΟΝΑΥΤΕΣ» του Νομού Μαγνησίας ιδρύθηκε το 1983 με πρώτο πρόεδρο τον κύριο Πέτρο Αβαράκη. Διοργάνωσαν χορούς, χριστουγεννιάτικες εκδηλώσεις, πικ νικ και πολλές δραστηριότητες στην παροικία του Τορόντο καθώς και στην μητέρα Ελλάδα και ιδιαιτέρως στον Βόλο με την στήριξη του ιδρύματος «ΟΙ Πεταλούδες» των παιδιών με ειδικές ανάγκες.
The history behind the name of the association
The term “Argonauts” came from the mythological story of Jason and the Argonauts. Jason was ordered to leave his city of Iolcus and voyage to Colchis in search of the Golden Fleece. His ship was named “Argo” after the person who made it. The ancient city of “Iolcus” is the modern day city of Volos, in the region of Magnesia.

The Association of Volos “the Argonauts”, has currently put on hold all major events and solely supports the Thessalian Federation of Ontario in achieving its goals of preserving, promoting and enhancing Thessalian culture and tradition.
The region of Magnesia is extremely well known for its beautiful beaches of which people from all over Europe visit every year. Its capital city is Volos. One of its most famous regions is Pelion. Magnesia lies on the coast of the Pagasetic Gulf (a bay of the Aegean sea) and the Aegean sea. The Sporades Islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos) are also part of this region.
The name Magnesia came from Magnis, the son of Aelos and the people who resided in this area were called Magnites. During the Turkish occupation the inhabitants moved to the mountain villages of Pelion.
Magnesia is very rich in culture; history, mythology, cultural traditions, artistic community and an abundant source of nature. Its main agricultural products are wheat, cotton, tomatoes, grapes, olives, apples, honey, almonds, peanuts and pistachio nuts.
Achilles, Jason, the Argonauts and the Centaurs are just some of the figures from the rich mythology of the region. Τhere are many local carnivals that are deep rooted in the tradition of the region that take place year round. Of course, we cannot forget that the movie “Mamma Mia” was filmed in several locations in the Pelion region and on the island of Skiathos.

Το όνομα Μαγνησία προήλθε από τον Μαγνή, γιο του Αέλου και οι άνθρωποι που κατοικούσαν σε αυτήν την περιοχή ονομάστηκαν Μαγνήτες. Κατά την Τουρκοκρατία οι κάτοικοι μετακόμισαν στα ορεινά χωριά του Πηλίου. Η πρωτεύουσα είναι ο Βόλος. Η Μαγνησία βρίσκεται στην ακτή του Παγασητικού κόλπου και του Αιγαίου. Οι Σποράδες (Σκιάθος, Σκόπελος, Αλόννησος) είναι επίσης μέρος αυτής της περιοχής. Αυτό προσφέρει μια πολύ μοναδική ποικιλία σε αυτήν την περιοχή. Μία από τις πιο διάσημες περιοχές του είναι το Πήλιο. Η περιοχή της Μαγνησίας είναι εξαιρετικά γνωστή για τις όμορφες παραλίες της τις οποίες επισκέπτονται κάθε χρόνο άνθρωποι από όλη την Ευρώπη και την Βόρειο Αμερική.
Η Μαγνησία είναι πολύ πλούσια σε πολιτισμό, ιστορία, μυθολογία, πολιτιστικές παραδόσεις, καλλιτεχνική δραστηριότητα και άφθονη πηγή φύσης. Τα κύρια γεωργικά προϊόντα της είναι το σιτάρι, το βαμβάκι, οι ντομάτες, τα σταφύλια, οι ελιές, τα μήλα, το μέλι, τα αμύγδαλα και τα φιστίκια.
Ο Αχιλλέας, ο Ιάσονας, οι Αργοναύτες και οι Κένταυροι είναι μερικές από τις φιγούρες της πλούσιας μυθολογίας της περιοχής. Υπάρχουν πολλά τοπικά καρναβάλια που έχουν βαθιές ρίζες στην αρχαιότητα και την παράδοση,τα οποία λαμβάνουν χώρα όλο το χρόνο. Φυσικά, δεν μπορούμε να ξεχάσουμε το γεγονός ότι η ταινία «Mamma Mia» γυρίστηκε σε διάφορες τοποθεσίες στην περιοχή του Πηλίου και στο νησί της Σκιάθου.
